Promise rings are officially back (and we’re SO here for it). These precious symbols have been worn as early as Ancient Rome, with its popularity ebbing and flowing through time. But with a peak in the last decade, it’s safe to say these emblematic bands have made their comeback.

What does a Promise ring mean?

Promise rings symbolise an emotional and mutual commitment to a romantic relationship, minus the formality of an engagement. It often reflects a couple’s loyalty, acts as a step before engagement, or can symbolise a more personal intention – different from one couple to another.

What’s the difference between a Promise Ring, Engagement Ring and a Stopgap Ring?

As we’ve elaborated above, Promise Rings are usually less formal than an Engagement Ring and can mean a variety of things – it can indeed be given as a prelude to an engagement, but equally so, to celebrate the time a couple has been together, or as a reminder of a personal promise.

On the other hand, Engagement Rings are used during proposals, where the couple have the intention of marrying formally, and are usually complemented with a wedding band during the wedding ceremony.

A Stopgap ring is a quick stand-in alternative for an engagement ring, often when the primary jewel is late or unavailable due to unforeseen delays, design changes or adjustments. However, they’re also increasingly bought as a ‘dupe’ acting as a stunt-double during travel or day-to-day wear to avoid the risks of loss, damage or theft.

Which finger do you wear it on?

Unlike Engagement Rings and wedding bands, there aren’t any hard and fast rules about
where Promise Rings should be worn. Feel free to switch it up, wear it on any hand or finger –
even as a pendant
